When I lived in Paris, the street I lived on had shutters on almost every window, and one of my neighbours told me how important they were. People treated them better than the windows! Now I know why people treasured them so much, I didn't realise the history behind them.

I must say that this is the most Interesting website I've ever seen about shutters! I'd never have thought of the ancient Greeks inventing shutters...with Marble, no less!

And...Yes, I DID say, "Wow!"

I look forward to the rest of your posts!

To be honest, shutters always make me think of other countries in Europe like Italy and France, and lazy mornings on warm streets. They're the kind of thing you don't notice on their own but they form a part of an image - and you never consider their history. Interesting read though, thanks for sharing x

Very interesting article. It takes me a few hours to make a complete finished shutter, I can't even begin to imagine how long it would take to make one out of marble!

They go back a long way. Fascinating to read this comprehansive history. I guess they were more widely used before glass was used in windows though. More of a neccessity then to keep building warm.

I think they look really good which is the main reason. I don't think they are particularly secure and cannot be used a a substitute for proper security measures as they can advertise the fact someone is out.

I've often wondered why modern shutters we're functional anymore. I guess its because the glass is so good these days. Still, I think functional shutters are a good idea in places where storms are common. Just a thought.

Shutters are the original energy saving device for homes and it is wonderful to read that they still are used for the same purposes today. now we might have electric ones or custom designs but they still do the same job and are a real energy saver when it comes to heating and cooling our homes.
