		<description>To answer GrowMap&#039;s question, shutters were around before air conditioning or heating, in fact before glass was used in windows. They were originally designed to keep the outside elements out, because all there was before was a gap for the window - so no way of keeping the weather out.</description>

		<description>I suspect that more houses had shutters before air conditioning and forced air heating were common. I wonder how much energy we might be able to save if we had shutters to reduce sun during the heat of the day or to close when a cold front raged through.
